"The Golden Guitar of Don Reno"

You've got his banjo classics, now get his rare guitar recordings. A King Records exclusive, this 15 song album is a piece of bluegrass history. Throughout his prolific life, one facet of Don Reno's talents eluded the general public ...until now. Not only was Don Reno one of the greatest banjo players to ever pick up the instrument - he was also a world-class guitar player in a league of his own.

With The Golden Guitar of Don Reno, King Records offers you the chance to finally experience Don Reno as a guitar maestro. Here's the story: One dreary fall day in November of 1972, Don Reno came in for his scheduled recording session with Bill Harrell and Buck Ryan at King Records Studio in Nashville, Tennessee. Harrell was to serve as the trio's lead singer and rhythm guitarist, while Ryan was the ace-fiddler. Harrell, however, had a rough case of laryngitis from a few weeks of heavy playing at George Jones' club, "Possum Holler," in addition to a night with Reno at the Grand Ole Opry. Harrell couldn't record, but Reno decided to take advantage of the reserved studio time. He wanted to make some guitar recordings, but only if he could find a suitable instrument. Oddly enough, Ronnie Reno had just had his dad's first guitar, a Martin Double-Ought 18, repaired for his use in an upcoming show with Merle Haggard's band in Las Vegas. As fate would have it, Don's very first guitar was ready just in time for him to play that day, and he completed 15 exceptional songs at the session.

Unfortunately, almost three decades would pass before anyone would hear the recordings. Shortly after Don's recording session, the ownership of King Records changed hands and Reno's songs were never released. Reno's guitar recordings were simply misplaced and forgotten during the commotion. The rare recordings seemed lost forever until one day Don's son Ronnie remembered that fateful day in the studio. Ronnie's memory of the guitar session prompted a discussion with Rick Fowler, King Records' resident bluegrass historian, and longtime King producer, Tommy Hill. The three approached King Records' owner Moe Lytle about recovering the Reno session, and Moe quickly decided the public should have access to the historical and masterful recordings. In 1998, King Records released The Golden Guitar of Don Reno, making the rare guitar work of the "King of the Flat-Pickin' Guitarists" available to the public for the first time. Enjoy this uncovered treasure-no bluegrass collection is complete without it.
